Five killed in 'targeted' attack on United States newspaper

Capital Gazette's Former Editor Was 'Seriously Concerned' About Alleged Shooter, Warned Wife

He said the reality of Thursday's attack hadn't truly set in yet.

He said he had barricaded a back door and "used a tactical approach in hunting down and shooting the innocent victims".

A 38-year-old named Jarrod Ramos, who had a long-running dispute with the paper, has been charged with five counts of murder, according to court documents posted online by United States media.

Ramos did not speak Friday at his bail hearing, but a woman who saw Ramos Thursday after his arrest in the Office of the Court Commissioner said Ramos was speaking then, hurling racial slurs. He filed a defamation suit against the paper in 2012 that was thrown out as groundless, and he often railed against its staff members in profanity-laced tweets. In it, Hartley described how Ramos stalked a former high school classmate on Facebook before ultimately pleading guilty to harassment.

This photo combination shows the victims of the shooting in the newsroom of the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., on Thursday, June 28, 2018.

"The shooter is in custody and is being interrogated at this time", Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh told a news conference.

Ramos had a dispute of many years with the paper over a story it had written about a criminal case against him. And he took to Twitter to call out the people he insisted had wronged him.

Ramos' apartment and vehicle were searched overnight, Altomare said, and some evidence has been found. It was only the latest in his continuing barrage of verbal assaults on the media that began with his campaign for the White House and stirred his base to rage at the reporters.

"I'll enjoy seeing @capgaznews cease publication, but it would be nicer to see Hartley and Marquardt cease breathing", he posted on February 2, 2015.

Struck by tragedy when a gunman with a grudge stormed their newsroom, journalists at a USA community newspaper pulled together to put out Friday's edition in tribute to their five murdered colleagues, targeted in the country's latest mass shooting.

Four journalists and an assistant sales manager were killed Thursday at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis.

The newspaper's editors left the editorial page blank with a note saying that they were speechless. He said nothing and was expressionless. In 2013, Ramos contacted the woman he had been found guilty of stalking. The online grudge apparently "went dark" for a period until some new posts just before the killings, Altomare said.

Police arrived at the scene of the shooting within a minute and apprehended Ramos within two minutes.

A reporter for the Capital Gazette, Phil Davis, tweeted that a "gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees". No gunfire was exchanged, they said.

United States president Donald Trump, who has had a combative relationship with the media since his 2016 election, was asked by reporters traveling with him on Air Force One whether he was reconsidering calling journalists "enemies of the people".

"We've had a lot of great journalists come through these doors in 94 years, and Rob Hiaasen was certainly one of them", WPTF host Mike Raley said.

Trump has frequently told supporters the press are the "enemy of the people". There are about 20 news staffers, a few more advertising. She added, "He's a f-- nut job", the report says.

"There is nothing in those complaints that prove that anything that was published about you is, in fact, false", the judge said, according to court documents.

Moyer did not respond to Ars' request for further comment on Friday afternoon. Ramos went on to sue the newspaper and Hartley for defamation, but his case was ultimately tossed.

"It feels so personal", said Mary Adams, who owns The Annapolis Bookstore and knew two of the victims.
