Facebook has rolled out a security control which enables users to know which devices are logged into their Facebook profile and then they can remove the one that they don’t wish to have access to, by the use of certain sites spammers which make the users enter their account details and then they use that information to use their profile and send spam messages to their Facebook friends.
This new features not just prevents such spammers from using someone’s profile but also allows the users to log out of an active session from another machine. This enables the people to have better control over their accounts.
“Feature allows you to close [a] session from anywhere—all from one central location in your account. In the unlikely case that someone accesses your account without your permission, you can shut down the unauthorized log-in before resetting your password and taking other steps to secure your account and computer”, said Facebook spokesperson.
This application will not be available immediately as it is being rolled out gradually. It is expected that the security feature will be available in a few weeks.
This is based on the feature added by Facebook in May that notifies the users when their account is accessed by a device they haven’t approved.
Andrew Walls who is the research director in Gartner analysis firm said, “Most security features Facebook are preventive and do not inform the user about the status of their security, this new feature enables the user to monitor, to a certain extent, access to their user profile. It should be noted that you must enable the log-in notification feature to access the new session monitoring capability.”
He also mentioned that this type of feature is commonly found in operating systems and identity and access management systems, but is relatively unusual in consumer-oriented SAAS.
